necklace set

Darryl Becenti, born 1957 in Gallup New Mexico was taught silversmithing by his brothers in law, Leroy and David Reeves in 1980. Darryl is also known for his sand painting. He unfortunately passed away this year ( 2020 ), thus making his jewelry a valuable window into this artists life’s work.

Red coral (Corallium Rubrum) comes from certain areas, such as the Mediterranean, where the specific water temperature and conditions allow coral to thrive. Coral is a hardened tube or branch. Only about 10% of coral is considered jewelry quality. Coral comes in shades from blood-red to orange to pink to white.

Although coral has been used by Stone Age peoples as long as 30,000 years ago to decorate sepulchers (burial vaults), Native American artists have only used coral for the last 600 years. When Europeans arrived in the New World, they brought with them “blood coral” from the waters of Spain and Italy.

This beautifully detailed pendant has over 40 individual pieces of sterling silver in it, the bail alone has 8 pieces in it ! The pendant measures 3″ in total length and is approximately 1-1/4″ across. Craftsmanship  is the theme of  this piece by Darryl Becenti. Stunning red coral is used in the center of the pendant. It measures 3/4″  x  1/4″ .The beaded necklace also has pieces of coral in between the silver beads, they measure 18-20″.  The earrings shown are included in the set and are the perfect compliment to this set.You will never see this again.
